Zeal for the Father’s House

Zeal for the Father’s House 3

The Sermon: John 2:13-17

13 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers doing business.15 When He had made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the changers’ money and overturned the tables. 16 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has consumed me.” [NKJV]

The Order Of Service …………………………… Supplement, Pages 12-15

P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen

Confession and Absolution

P: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and deserve only His wrath and punishment.  Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child.  But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love.  Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever.  You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will.

C: Amen.

The Scripture Reading – Psalm 122

As King David and the Israelites ascended to the Temple, the Lord’s house, its importance in their hearts and lives was not lost on them. There the Lord was present with them in all His glory; There they found peace with God through the proclamation of His Word and Gospel; There they found spiritual blessing and security. Small wonder they (and we) rejoiced over the privilege of going to the Lord’s house.

I rejoiced with those who said to me, let us go to the house of the Lord. Psalm 122:1

The Apostles Creed (Supplement Page 15)

I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Offering

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction ♫ Amen

(Based Upon Psalm 84 and John 2:13-17)

1. I love God’s house, a sacred place –
A haven of His love and grace.
His Word’s proclaimed, my faith to feed;
His promise sure in every need.

2. “Zeal for the Father’s house”, He said,
To cleanse the temple Christ was led.
Zeal for the Father’s house, we pray,
Leads us to worship, serve each day.

3. Worthy the Lamb for sinners slain,
Worthy the Victor o’er death’s chains.
Worthy of honor, glory, praise
Now and through everlasting days.

4. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts;
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen.
