You are the Divine Potter’s Vessel

You are the Divine Potter's Vessel 1

Sermon: Jeremiah 18: 1-10

The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do. Then the word of the Lord came to me: “O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the Lord. Behold, like the clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. If at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it. And if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, 10 and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it.

The Invocation

The Confessional Prayer

            We poor sinners confess to You, O God, that not only have we been conceived and born in sin, but also that throughout life we have often and in many ways offended You, our Lord and Maker, in thought, word and deed, so that You could with perfect justice reject and condemn us for all eternity. Therefore we come before You with sorrowful and repentant hearts. O merciful God, we flee to Your infinite mercy, and implore You, dearest Father, for the sake of Jesus Christ, Your only-begotten Son, our Brother, Who was delivered for our trespasses and raised again for our justification: Forgive us all our sins, strengthen our faith, and lead us safely through this sin-laden life and world to the peace, joy and glory of our heavenly home.

The Absolution

The Scripture Reading – Psalm 89 – Excerpts

            As great as is God’s creative power and glory, even greater is His covenant of grace and mercy promised to David and fulfilled in David’s greater Son, the Messiah, Who would establish God’s Kingdom forever in the hearts of those who believe God’s promises. Although there would be many defections and rejections throughout time, yet God’s faithfulness and mercy would endure – ever reaching out through the Gospel to deliver us from the dust and destiny of sin and death.

 “Create In Me” (Page 12 in Hymnal)

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me,
Cast me not away from Thy presence;
and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;
and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen.

Hymn “O Breath of Life
(based on Ezekiel 37:1-14 and sung to the melody of Hymn 115 written by DRS)

  1. O Breath of Life, Creator God,
    When all was without form and void,
    You spoke your Word, “Now let there be”;
    A world was made – sky, land, and sea.
  2. O Breath of Life, Creator God,
    From dust You formed our bodies good;
    Your breath of life you breathed in them –
    A living soul did man become!
  3. O Breath of Life, you gave us Life
    To love and praise You without strife;
    Yet when we sinned and death came near,
    Your Love came down, removed our fear.
  4. O Breath of Life, my Savior ev’r;
    True God and Man, You came from Heav’n;
    You gave Yourself to death and hell
    T’atone for sin, to Satan fell.
  5. O Breath of Life, O Risen Lord,
    You conquered death, as by your Word;
    Ascended, rules, prepares a place
    For all believing sons of Grace.
  6. O Breath of Life, O Spirit sent,
    Through Gospel Word and Sacrament,
    To breathe new life in these “dry bones”,
    To live through faith in Christ alone.
  7. O Breath of Life, on that Last Day,
    When Christ returns in glo’y arrayed,
    Then these “dry bones”, our bodies dust,
    Shall rise and live: God’s promise trust!
  8. O Breath of Life, Eternal Lord,
    To Heav’n our spirits, bodies soar,
    Raised by Your pow’r, we shall adore
    And praise Your name forevermore!

The Offering of Thankful Hearts

Our Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction
