The Invocation

Our Reformation Litany

P: “Unless I am convinced by Holy Scripture, my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen.” Here, many years later, in a hostile world that still ridicules and persecutes those who stand up for Jesus and who stand upon His Word – Here we still stand by faith, upon the sacred and eternal truths of His Word.

C: Here we still stand, God help us. Amen.

P: The Truth is: All of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. All of us deserve God’s anger and punishment for our sins. None of us is worthy of the least of all the mercies and truth that God has granted us.

C: This we confess and plead for God’s mercy in Christ Jesus, our Savior.

P: The Truth is: It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not. God loved us and sent His Son into the world as the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Christ lived for us, Christ died for us, Christ rose again for us. Whoever believes on Him will not perish, but have everlasting life. Be of good cheer, your sins are forgiven you. You are righteous and at peace with God.

C: In this we believe and rejoice as redeemed children of God.

P: The Truth is: By grace we are saved through faith and that not of ourselves; It is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. Our works cannot add any merit to the completed and complete saving work of Christ.

C: For this we give all honor and glory to the Lamb for sinners slain.

P: The truth is: We still struggle against the “roaring lion seeking to devour us”, the “forces of darkness” that envelop us and the rebellious enemy within us. It is a battle which we ourselves cannot win. Yet the power of the Gospel and the weapons of the Word are still ours in Christ and they shall overcome. The very gates of hell shall not prevail against His Church.

C: Here we stand, we cannot do otherwise. God help us! Amen.

The Scripture Reading – Psalm 46

Luther’s great Reformation hymn, “A Mighty Fortress”, is based upon this Psalm – which provided immense spiritual comfort and strength in the face of the great struggles which he faced in the Reformation. Because the Lord of hosts was with him, there was no one or nothing to fear, for victory over all enemies was assured.

Our Reformation Creed (Words Of Hymn 954 – Written By Luther)

We all believe in one true God, Who created earth and heaven,
The Father, Who to us in love  Has the right of children given.
He in soul and body feeds us; All we need His hand provides us;
Through all snares and perils leads us. Watching that no harm betide us.
He cares for us by day and night; All things are governed by His might.

We all believe in Jesus Christ,  His own Son, our Lord, possessing
An equal Godhead, throne, and might, Source of every grace and blessing; Born of Mary, virgin mother, By the power of the Spirit,
Word made flesh, our elder Brother, That the lost might life inherit,
Was crucified for all our sin   And raised by God to life again.

We all confess the Holy Ghost, Who, in highest heaven dwelling
With God the Father and the Son, Comforts us beyond all telling;
Who the Church, His own creation, Keeps in unity of spirit.
Here forgiveness and salvation  Daily come through Jesus’ merit.
All flesh shall rise, and we shall be   In bliss with God eternally.
