How Firm a Foundation

500th Anniversary of the Reformation Sunday

Sunday, October 29, 2017 (9:00 a.m.)

Opening Invocational Prayer & Our Responsive Reformation Litany

P: With Martin Luther, Lord, we are troubled by our many sins and failures to live according to Your holy Law – to hear and treasure Your Word, to trust You and follow You in all things, to love You with all our hearts and each other as ourselves.

C: “God, be merciful to me, a sinner. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

P: With Luther, we rejoice in the faith-discovery of Your Gospel, which has opened heaven for us. Our salvation does not depend on our works, but upon faith in the saving work of Jesus Christ- Who perfectly fulfilled the Law for us, gave Himself as an atoning sacrifice for our sins, and rose victoriously to overcome death for all who believe.

C: “The righteous will live by faith… For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; It is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

P: With Luther, we look to You and Your Word alone as the only authoritative voice in the church. Since it has been established that the hearts and voices of men, even of councils and churches, are tainted by sin and often err, we say with Luther of Scripture: “Here we stand, God help us!:

C: “If you continue in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free… Hold fast to the faithful Word which you have received.”

P: Lord, we are thankful for our Reformation and Lutheran heritage. Throughout history, You have provided for the needs of Your church by raising up faithful servants who have proclaimed Your Word and Truth in our homes, churches and schools.

C: “Remember those who have spoken the Word of God to you; Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.”

The Scripture Reading – Revelation 14: 6-7

As the angels (messengers) in Revelation often represent human agents the Lord uses to proclaim His message, so our Lord has throughout history raised up servant voices to herald His “everlasting Gospel”, including the Reformation voice of Martin Luther.

The Apostles Creed (Inside Back Cover Of Hymnal)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn – “How Firm A Foundation”

♫ 1 How firm a foundation, you saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
Who unto the Savior for refuge have fled?

3 “Fear not, I am with thee, oh, be not dismayed;
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.

7 “The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake!”
[TLH 427 v 1, 3, 7]

The Sermon: Romans 3: 28

“Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith, without the deeds of the law.”

Hymn:  “Noting the Solas: To God Alone the Glory”
Text © 2017 P. Fleischer                    Tune: TLH 483

Our Luth’ran heritage we celebrate—
Salvation comes by faith in CHRIST ALONE.
This world of sinners all deserved a fate
From which God’s Son alone could us atone.

God’s Word reveals His holy will for man.
We look therefore to that pure WORD ALONE.
We’ll fear no man’s decree or papal ban;
By Scripture only, grace and faith are known.

Without our aid, but prompted by His love,
God’s saving plan took place—by GRACE ALONE.
Sin is forgiv’n! This gospel from above
Proclaims to all Christ Jesus, Cornerstone.

Whoe’er believes—faith is the Spirit’s work—
Is God’s dear child and that by FAITH ALONE!
Through Word and water a new life is born;
No longer dead in sin, faith’s fruits are shown.

Glory to God–the Father with the Son
And Holy Spirit–the great Three in One.
Our hymn of praise we raise to HIM ALONE
Now and forever, since our crown is won!

The Lord’s Prayer (Inside Back Cover Of Hymnal)

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction ♫ Amen, Amen, Amen

♫ 4 But God had seen my wretched state Before the world’s foundation,
And mindful of His mercies great, He planned for my salvation.
He turned to me a father’s heart; He did not choose the easy part
But gave His dearest treasure.

And with united heart and voice And holy rapture singing,

Grades 5-6: Sola Scriptura! Sola Gratia! Sola Fidei! The Scriptures alone – the only foundation of Christian faith and belief; Grace alone – God’s undeserved love – the only source of God’s salvation; Faith Alone – The only way to receive Christ’s blessings of forgiveness and eternal life.

Grades 7-8: The Bible tells us – “Remember those who spoke the Word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:7-8) We remember and give thanks for Martin Luther and all the faithful down through the ages who have spoken the Word of God to us. Perhaps Luther’s greatest hymn of Reformation is based on Psalm 46:

All Sunday school children: “God is our refuge and Strength, a very present Help in trouble; Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the depth of the sea…. The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our Refuge.”… “If God be for us, who can be against us.”
