Out of the Stump of Jesse – A Shoot!

Out of the Stump of Jesse - A Shoot!

The Sermon:  Isaiah 11: 1 – 10 (Excerpts)

A shoot will come up from the stem of Jesse; From His roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest upon Him – the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord… With righteousness He will judge; Righteousness will be His belt and faithfulness the sash around His waist. The wolf will lie down with the lamb, the leopard with the goat, the calf and the lion together – and a little Child shall lead them……. The Infant will play near the hole of the cobra and the young Child put his hand into the viper’s nest. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; The nations will rally to Him, and His place of rest will be glorious.

The Lighting Of The Advent Candle
The custom of Advent Candles is not only rich in tradition but also in symbolism. As we prepare for the coming of the “Light” into our world of darkness, we rejoice that by faith our hearts now bask in the light of Christ’s love, forgiveness, salvation and glory. The four candles represent the four Sundays of Advent and are purple to reflect the glorious reign of our King of glory. They are often found in a circular wreath of green – symbolizing eternal life. Each candle carries a special Advent significance. Our first candle is called the “Prophecy Candle” to remind us of the many wonderful Old Testament prophecies of the Savior’s coming that stirred the hearts of the faithful.

What the fathers most desired, What the prophet’s heart inspired,
What they longed for many a year, Stands fulfilled in glory here.
Welcome, O my Savior, now! Hail! My Portion, Lord art thou.

Here, too, in my heart, I pray. Oh, prepare Thyself a way!
Brightly doth Thy manger shine, Glorious is its light divine.
Let not sin o’er cloud this light; Ever be our faith thus bright.

TLH 56 : Jesus Came, the Heavens Adoring Hymnary.org link

Jesus came, the heavens adoring, Came with peace from realms on high;
Jesus came for man’s redemption, Lowly came on earth to die;
Alleluia! Alleluia! Came in deep humility.

Jesus comes to hearts rejoicing, Bringing news of sins forgiven;
Jesus comes in sounds of gladness, Leading souls redeemed to heaven.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Now the gate of heaven is riven.

Jesus comes on clouds triumphant When the heavens shall pass away;
Jesus comes again in glory. Let us, then, His homage pay.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Till the dawn of endless day.
