Our Great Prophet, Priest, and King

Deuteronomy 18:15

The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your  midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear.”

Hebrews 7: 26-27

“For such a High Priest was fitting for us, Who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners –  Who does not need daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for his own sins and then for the people’s, for this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.”

John 18: 37

The Invocation, Confession Of Sins And Absolution

P: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

P: Our help is in the Name of the Lord,

C: Who made heaven and earth.

P: If You, Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?

C: But with You there is forgiveness.

P:  Since we are gathered in God’s presence,  let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition.  Together as His people, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God be merciful to me, a sinner.

C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen.

The Absolution Spoken By Pastor & Responsive Reading

P:  Throughout Scripture our Lord was given many names. Each of those Names was chosen by the Holy Spirit and revealed to in Scripture to deepen understanding & appreciation of Jesus’ saving work.

C: As our Divine Prophet, He is the eternal Word Who is the ultimate revelation of God’s saving love to all mankind. He Himself was anointed by the Spirit to preach good tidings to the spiritually poor. Today He still proclaims the Word through those called & sent to preach the Gospel.(Jn 1;Is 61)

P: As our great High Priest, Jesus  once sacrificed Himself for the sins of all people and functions as our Heavenly Advocate, speaking in defense of all the forgiven and righteous whom Satan accuses of sin.

C: “Behold, the Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world.” “It is Christ Who died, and furthermore is also risen,  Who is even at the right hand of God, Who makes intercession for us.” (John 5:29; Romans 8:34)

P: As our heavenly King,  Jesus has conquered all our enemies by His death on the cross & resurrection from the dead. He continues to rule over all things in heaven and earth for the welfare of His Church.

C: “And God seated Him at His right hand, far above all principality and power… not only in this age but in that which is to come. And he put all things under His feet and gave Him to be the head over all things for the church.”….“ Hallelujah! For the Lord God omnipotent reigns… King of kings and Lord of lords.” (Ephesians 1: 19-22; Revelation 19: 6,16)

Sing   LSB 524 : How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds Hymnary.org link

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds  In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds  And drives away his fear.
Dear Name! The Rock on which I build,  My Shield and Hiding Place;
My never-failing Treasury, filled  With boundless stores of grace.

Jesus, my Shepherd, Guardian, Friend,  My Prophet, Priest and King,
My Lord, my Life, my Way, my End,  Accept the praise I bring.
Till then I would Thy Love proclaim  With every fleeting breath;
And may the music of Thy Name  Refresh my soul in death!

Luther’s Explanation To The Second Article

I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from  eternity, and also true Man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death. All this He did that I should be His own, and live under Him in His kingdom, and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness, just as He has risen from death and lives and rules eternally. This is most certainly true.
