Luther: Bold Confessor of the Faith

Sermon: 1 Peter 4: 12,16 – “Dear Friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the suffering of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when His glory is revealed….. If you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear His Name.”

Song by Choir – “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah”

(Director: Cathy Augustin ; Accompanist: Susi Rehm)

1 Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this barren land.
I am weak but Thou art mighty; Hold me with Thy pow’rful hand.
Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want no more.

2 Open now the crystal fountain Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar Lead me all my journey through.
Strong Deliverer,  Be Thou still my Strength and Shield.

Congregation ♫ 3:
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell’s Destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side.
Songs of praises, I will ever give to Thee.

The Invocation And Reformation Litany

P: All of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

C: This is most certainly true.

P: But God is truly merciful, and because of Jesus Christ, He freely accepts us and sets us free from our sin.

C: Here we stand; God help us! Amen.

P: From the bondage of Satan, sin and death, Christ has set us free.

C: This is most certainly true.

P: For we hold that a person is justified by faith and not by the deeds of the Law.

C: Here we stand; God help us! Amen.

P: God gave Christ to die for our sins, and raised Him to life, so that we would become acceptable to God.

C: This is most certainly true.

P: You have been saved by God’s grace through faith. This is not of your own doing; It is the gift of God.

C: Here we stand; God help us! Amen.

The Apostles Creed (Inside Back Cover Of Hymnal)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn: “The Sure Prophetic Word” (Pastor W.M. Czmanske, 1917)
Based on 2 Peter 1:19-21 (Melody: Hymn 277 In The Lutheran Hymnal)

♫ C: 1.The sure prophetic Word of God  Revealed to holy men
At various times in ages past  Has come to us again.
It is the Word our Savior spoke  While He was here below,
The Word restored by Luther’s hand  Five hundred years ago.

2.The sure prophetic Word has come  To shed it blessed light,
To drive away the clouds of grief,  The dark and gloomy night.
And we do well to heed the Word,  To keep this treasure pure,
Because it holds the precious gems,  The riches that endure.

3.The sure prophetic Word has come  To us that we may trace
The Love that gave His only Son,  The Father’s boundless grace.
The Word alone has power to save,  To make us truly wise,
That we may see the dawn appear  The Morning Star arise.

The Lord’s Prayer (Inside Back Cover Of Hymnal)

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
