Lord, Open Our Eyes to See Your Unseen Blessings… And Give Thanks!

The Sermon: 2 Kings 6: 15-18

And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army surrounding the city with horses and chariots.  And his servant said to him,  “Alas, my master!  What shall we do?”  So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them,” And Elisha prayed and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. So when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, and said, “Strike this people, I pray, with blindness.” And he struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.

The Invocation and Confession of Sins

C: As I this Thanksgiving enter Your house to praise You for all Your blessings, dear heavenly Father, I come confessing my own sinfulness, selfishness and unthankfulness.  Truly I deserve only Your anger and condemnation. Yet, for the sake of Jesus, my Savior, forgive me, renew me and grant me a contented and appreciative heart. Amen.

The Scripture Reading – Psalm 100

(A Believer’s Thanksgiving Response to All God’s Blessings)

We Profess Our Thanksgiving Faith (Luther’s 1st Article)

I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe that God has made me and every creature and that He gave me my body and soul, eyes, ears and all my members, my mind and all my abilities. And I believe that God still preserves me by richly and daily providing clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, cattle and all  that I own, and all that I need to keep my body and life, and by defending me against all danger and guarding and protecting me from all evil.  All this God does only because He is my good and merciful Father in heaven, and not because I have earned or deserved it.  For all this I ought to thank and praise, to serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true.

Hymn – Give Thanks unto the Lord
(Lyrics – Judith Snell; Melody – Hymn 161)

♫ Give thanks unto the Lord, our God – For He alone is Good.
In Christ He chose us as His own, Before the mountains stood.
He ransomed and redeemed us; He set the prisoners free.
Our sins were cast forever – Into the deepest sea.

Give thanks unto the Lord, our God – For He alone is Love!
In tender mercy for us all, He left His home above.
His goodness is eternal, No gift can e’er outweigh.
His faithfulness surrounds Him; It fails us not each day.

Give thanks unto the Lord, our God – For He alone is Grace!
Messiah, Christ, Redeemer; Prepared for us a place –
Within the courts of Heaven Before His Father’s throne;
Through sacrifice upon the cross – Forever made His own.

Give thanks unto the Lord, our God – For He alone is Great!
Before the throne He intercedes, Our loving Advocate.
He is the Shepherd of the sheep, The Prince of Peace and Friend;
Lion of Judah, First and Last, The living Word, the End.

Give thanks unto the Lord, our God – For He alone is Peace!
To magnify His name alone; Begin and never cease.
May the love of Jesus fill us – As the waters fill the sea;
Forever Christ exalting, Our King of Victory.

We praise Thee, O God, our Redeemer, Creator,
In grateful devotion our tribute we bring;
We lay it before Thee, we kneel and adore Thee,
We bless Thy holy Name, glad praises we sing.

With voices united our praises we offer,
To Thee, great Jehovah, glad anthems we raise,
Thy strong arm will guide us, our God is beside us,
To Thee, our great Redeemer, fore’er be praise.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction Amen
