The Last Day: Grace and Judgment

The Last Day: Grace and Judgment

The Sermon: Malachi 3: 14-18

14 “You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God. What did we gain by carrying out his requirements and going about like mourners before the LORD Almighty? 15 But now we call the arrogant blessed. Certainly the evildoers prosper, and even those who challenge God escape.’ ” 16 Then those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened and heard. A scroll of remembrance was written in his presence concerning those who feared the LORD and honored his name. 17 “They will be mine,” says the LORD Almighty, “in the day when I make up my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as in compassion a man spares his son who serves him. 18 And you will again see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between those who serve God and those who do not.

The Invocation & the Confession of Sins

We come before You as creatures before their Creator, as sinners before their holy God and as Your redeemed and repentant children before their dear Father in heaven. Humbly we confess to You our sinfulness and our sins, which deserve Your just judgment and condemnation. Gratefully I look to the cross of Jesus for forgiveness and salvation. Thankfully I praise You for Your Gospel covenant of mercy and grace.

The Absolution

LSB 563 v1: Jesus, Thy Blood and Righteousness Hymnary.org link

Jesus, Thy blood and righteousness My beauty are, my glorious dress;
Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed, With joy shall I lift up my head.
Bold shall I stand in that great Day, For who aught to my charge shall lay?
Fully through these absolved I am From sin and fear, from guilt and shame.

The Scripture Reading – Luke 21: 25-36

Just as the “signs” of winter’s coming are evidenced all around us in nature in this Fall season, so the “signs” of our Lord’s certain and imminent return surround us as well. While for many it will be a day of dread, for those who are spiritually prepared, it will be a joyous day of redemption.

The Apostles Creed (Page 12 in Hymnal)

I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

 “Create In Me” (Page 12 in Hymnal)

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me,
Cast me not away from Thy presence;
and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;
and uphold me with Thy free spirit.

The Offering of Thankful Hearts

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction Amen
