The Kingdom of God – Created to Grow!

Matthew 13: 31-32 The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field.

The Sermon: Matthew 13: 31-32

“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all your seeds,  yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.”

Song by Choir – “Arise, O God, and Shine”
(Director: Cathy Augustin ; Accompanist: Susi Rehm)

1 Arise, O God, and shine in all Thy saving might,
and prosper each design to spread Thy glorious light:
let healing streams of mercy flow, that all the earth Thy truth may know, that all the earth Thy truth may know.

2 Bring distant nations near to sing Thy glorious praise;
let ev’ry people hear and learn Thy holy ways:
reign, mighty God, assert Thy cause, and govern by Thy righteous laws, and govern by Thy righteous laws.

3 Put forth Thy glorious pow’r, that Gentiles all may see,
and earth present her store in converts born to Thee:
God, our own God, His church will bless, and fill the world with righteousness, and fill the world with righteousness.

4 To God, the only wise, the one immortal King,
let hallelujahs rise from ev’ry living thing:
let all that breathe, on ev’ry coast, praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

The Invocation And Confessional Prayer

A Responsive Reading

P: By Your grace, Heavenly Father, You have granted us the privilege of seeing our Savior in Your Son, Who said, “I am the Light of the world.”

C: “He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

P: You, O Father in Christ, have invited all people to share in the blessings of Your Kingdom, for it is written:

C: “God would have all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the Truth.”

P: Therefore we pray You, fill us with a new love and zeal so that there may be more of our missionaries and home and abroad to send out Your Light and Your Truth. Make us all more aware of our responsibilities over against those who know not their Lord and Savior so that we may be more willing and better able to witness for You in any way possible.

C: Spread, O spread, Thou mighty Word,
Spread the Kingdom of the Lord,
Whatsoe’er His breath has given
Life for being meant for heaven.

P: O crucified and risen Savior, give us grace to be personal witnesses to You and Your salvation. Give us the spirit of the Psalmist, who said:

C: “I believed, therefore I have spoken.”

P: O blessed Savior, as we hear You say to us: “You shall be witnesses unto Me”, overcome our timidity and the fear of man’s ridicule and threats, so that we may say with Your brave confessors, Peter and John:

C: “We cannot but speak the things we have seen and heard.”

P: In these last days, when the Word and Gospel message is not only ignored but also rejected and hated, give us the spirit of the early Christians of whom it was said:

C: “They counted themselves worthy of suffering for Jesus’ Name…. and never stopped proclaiming the Gospel that Jesus is the Christ.”

P: O Lord, impress upon our hearts the glory of our calling as Your witnesses. Teach and train us to seek and serve the eternal interests of Your Kingdom, not only by supporting Your work with our prayers and gifts, but also by testifying in word and deed to the hope that is in us. Not only in church – but at home, at work, at school, everywhere we go, whatever we do – may we exert a wholesome Christian influence upon those around us, so that they may hear and see Christ in us and be led to become His children by faith and heirs of eternal life. May we be what Christ has made us – the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

C: “Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father Who is in heaven.”

The Scripture Reading – Matthew 13: 31 – 43

In these short parables, our Savior instructs us regarding His Kingdom – it’s growth in the hearts of men (sermon) and its ultimate separation from the weeds of unbelief on the Last Day.

The Apostles Creed (Inside Back Cover Of Hymnal)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

“Create In Me” (Hymn 956)

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me,
Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit.

Our Offering

The Lord’s Prayer (Inside Back Cover Of Hymnal)

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction ♫ Amen, Amen, Amen

Closing Hymn – “Go Into All The World”
(Based On Matthew 28: 18-20; Lyrics By Judith Snell; Melody: Hymn 856)

♫ 1.Go into all the world. This is the Lord’s command,
To all His church in ev’ry age – With Christ go hand-in-hand.
Good news to all the world; That Jesus paid the price
For ev’ry sin He gave His all – His death the sacrifice.

2.Teach all that God has taught. Baptize them in God’s name.
The message of the cross alone; Assist us to proclaim!
His grace and strength He gives; Renews each day by day.
His wisdom, mercy, matchless love – Go with us on the way.

3.The harvests fields are white; The reapers there are few
For time is short, yet there is room! There’s work for us to do.
Reach out to all the lost – With grace and pardoning love.
Be salt and light. God in His Name. Our Help is from above.
