LENTEN VESPERS 2012 For Pre-Service Reading

March 14 – Psalm 116, Page 148 In Front Of Hymnal

March 14 – “Father, O Hear Me” (Psalm 13 Paraphrase)
Father, O hear me! In mercy hear me and turn not, O Father, and turn not from me. How long in darkness, wilt Thou forget me? When daily sorrows compass me, lighten mine eyes lest sleeping, O Father, I slumber in death. But I have trusted in Thy compassion; My heart shall rejoice in Thee, rejoice in Thy salvation. Thou
hast dealt kindly with me. Hear me, O Father, O hear me! In mercy hear me, and turn not, O Father, and turn not from me.

The Invocation

Our Confession Of Sins Great Redeemer, strong to save, in this holy season we again see the depth of Your mercy and love for us. You were stricken, smitten and afflicted; You endured horrific abuse, agony, and death at the hands of men; You were forsaken by God, incurring the very pangs of hell. None of this You deserved, for You were holy and innocent. Yet in love You came for us – to bear the curse and punishment for our sins, to redeem a lost world. We are hushed and humbled in repentance for what our sins brought upon You. Yet our hearts are stirred by Your Gospel promise and hope. Forgive us and grant us Your peace. Humbly and happily we proclaim, “In the cross of Christ I glory!”

Thou knowest all my griefs and fears, Thy grace abused, my misspent years. Yet now to Thee with contrite tears, Christ Crucified, I come. Wash me and take away each stain, Let nothing of my sin remain. For cleansing, though it be through pain, Christ Crucified, I come. Drawn to the Cross, which Thou hast blest With healing gifts for souls distrest, To find in Thee my life, my rest, Christ Crucified, I come.

The Absolution (Spoken By Pastor)

The Scripture Reading (Because of our Sunday sermon and Bible Class meditation on the Passion Story, it will not be read on Wednesday – with selected Scripture readings instead.)

March 14 – Romans 5: 1-5; 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10 (Suffering Strength)

Our Lenten Profession Of Faith

I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true Man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord. He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil – not with gold or silver, but with His innocent suffering and death. All this He did that I should be His own and live under Him and his kingdom, and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness. Just as He is reisen from death, lives and rules to all eternity. This is most certainly true.
