I Know Whom I Have Believed

2 Timothy 1:14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you - guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

The Sermon: 2 Timothy 1: 12-14

“I am not ashamed, because I know Whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day. What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you – guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit Who lives in us.”

Song by SS Children – “Lift High the Cross” – Hymn 837 v 1,4-6

Refrain:
Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim, Till all the world adore His sacred name.

Come, Christians, follow where our Captain trod, Our king victorious, Christ, the Son of God.

O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, As thou hast promised, draw us all to Thee.

Let ev’ry race and ev’ry language tell Of Him who saves our lives from death and hell.

So shall our song of triumph ever be: Praise to the Crucified for victory!

The Invocation And Confessional Prayer

C: As our first parents fled from Your holy presence because of their sin-shame, as Joseph of old declared himself unworthy of the least of all Your mercies, as the Children of Israel trembled before Your thundering presence at Mount Sinai, as Isaiah proclaimed Himself a ruined man of unclean lips before Your holiness, so we come into Your house and holy presence as sinners deserving only of Your judgment and punishment. Yet we also come echoing the cry spoken by the penitent tax-collector: “God, be merciful to me a sinner.” For the sake of Christ Jesus, Whose atoning blood cleanses us from all sin, forgive us, receive us, renew us. Amen.

The Athanasian Creed (Excerpts)

C: Whoever desires to be saved must hold the Christian faith. And the Christian faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity in unity, neither confusing the Persons nor dividing the Substance. So the Father is God, the Son is God and the Holy Spirit is God; And yet there are not three Gods, but one God. And in this Trinity none is before or after another; None is greater or less than another; Therefore, whoever desires to be saved must think thus about the Trinity.

It is also necessary for everlasting salvation that one faithfully believe the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time both God and Man. He is God, begotten of the Father before all ages; And He is Man, born of His mother in this age: Perfect God and perfect Man, equal to the Father in His divinity, less than the Father in His humanity. Although He is God and Man, He is not two, but one Christ – one, however, not by the conversion of the divinity into flesh, but by the assumption of the humanity into God.

So God and Man is one Christ, who suffered for our salvation, descended into hell, rose again the third day from the dead, ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, God almighty, from whence He will come to judge the living and the dead. At His coming all will rise – and those who believe will enter eternal life, and those who do not into eternal hellfire. This is the Christian faith. Whoever does not believe it faithfully and firmly cannot be saved.

“Create In Me” (Hymn 956)

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me,
Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit.

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
