The Good Life in Christ

The Sermon: 1 Peter 3: 8-14

8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.” 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened.”  [’84 NIV]

Scripture Reading – Matthew 6:19-24, 34

Our heart treasures will be reflected in our life priorities and decisions – for better or for worse! May our faith and life be devoted to securing treasures in heaven, with the Lord’s assurance that he will take care of everything else.

The Apostles Creed (Page 15 in Supplement)

I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth;

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

C: ♫ Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from Your presence.  Take not Your Holy Spirit from me.  Restore to me the joy of Your salvation.  Uphold me with Your Spirit free.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Song by Choir – “A Benediction” (Lippert) (Director: Cathy Augustin)

Closing Hymn “The Lord Bless Thee” (Melody TLH 4-Lyrics Wartchow)

The Lord bless thee! How oft since Aaron’s time
Have priests and pastors with thee words sublime

In church and temple told God’s love to men;
And still it thrills the hearers, now as then.

“The Lord be gracious unto thee.” We need
Thy grace, O Lord, For heavy is indeed
The load of sin if it is borne alone’
But for our sins the Savior did atone.

“And give thee peace.” Ah, Lord, what dark unrest
Is in our souls until we thus are blest
By that assurance that our Savior gives,
That Christ, our blest Redeemer, ever lives.

As we and all our children ever hear
Those blessed words each Sunday, may they cheer
Our hearts and keep us ever in Thy way
Till we shall dwell with Thee in endless day.
