God’s Wonderful Christmas Language

Berea Lutheran Church

The Sermon: Hebrew 1: 1 -3

In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, Whom He appointed heir of all things, and through Whom He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His Being, sustaining all things by His powerful Word.

The Invocation And Confession Of Sins

C: Almighty God, in this holy Advent season we prepare our hearts to receive You as our King and Savior. Through Your holy Law, we know and confess our own sin and spiritual unworthiness. We deserve neither Your grace nor Your coming. Yet in faith we cling to Your saving Gospel assurances. Forgive us for the sake of the your Son, our Advent Savior. May we receive Him in faith and ever rejoice in Your saving Love.

The Absolution (The Assurance of God’s Forgiveness In Christ)

An Advent Responsive Reading

P: The story of Advent and Christmas is told in many ways and in many places in Holy Scripture. One of the most wonderful ways is the many names God gave to His Son. Each of those names speaks volumes about the Person and work of God’s Son in coming to earth.  The very first prophetic Name was “The Seed of the woman”, a human descendant of Eve Whom God would send to crush the serpent’s head & through His victory over sin, death and Satan bring salvation to a lost and fallen world. Many other names would follow throughout Old testament times:

C: “Behold, a virgin will conceive and bear a Son, and He will be called Immanuel – which means, ‘God with us” (Isaiah 7:14).“And He shall be called the wonderful Counselor, the mighty God,the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace(Isaiah 9:7).“Lift up your heads… And the King of glory shall come in” (Psalm 24:7). “You are My Servant, in Whom I will be glorified.” (Isaiah 49:7)“I know that my Redeemer lives” (Job 19:25). “The days are coming when I will raise up from David a righteous Branch, who will cause His people to live in safety. And He shall be called, The Lord, our Righteousness”.

P: Before our Lord’s birth, both Mary and Zachariah connected thisChristmas birth with the fulfillment of God’s Old Testament covenant promises of the coming Messiah. Both the Old Testament Messiah and the New Testament Christ mean “The Anointed One”. Meaningful & wonderful are the names given to this Bethlehem’s special Child by His Father through the Christmas angels and the inspired New Testament writers.

C: “And you shall call His Name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior which is Christ the Lord.(Luke 2:11) “We have found the Messiah (that is, the Christ)”(John 1:41).”You are the Christ, the Son of the living God(Matthew 16:16). “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”(John 1:14).”I am the Good Shepherd; The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep” (John 10:11). “I am the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last,am the Living One; I was dead, but now I  am alive forever more”.  (Revelation 1: 17-18).

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Christian church, the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen.
