God’s Unchained Word and Gospel

Sermon: 2 Timothy 2: 8-13

8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. 11 Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; 13 if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

The Invocation and Responsive Reading of Psalm 86 v 1-10

P: Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me,
C: For I am poor and needy.
P: Preserve my life, for I am godly;
C: Save your servant, who trusts in you—you are my God.
P: Be gracious to me, O Lord,
C: For to you do I cry all the day.
P: Gladden the soul of your servant,
C: For to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
P: For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,
C: Abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
P: Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
C: Listen to my plea for grace.
P: In the day of my trouble I call upon you,
C: For you answer me.
P: There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
C: Nor are there any works like yours.
P: All the nations you have made shall come and worship before you, O Lord,
C: And shall glorify your name.
P: For you are great and do wondrous things;
C:  You alone are God.

TLH 31 V 1-2, 5: When All Thy Mercies, O My God Hymnary.org link

When all Thy mercies, O my God,  My rising soul surveys,
Transported with the view, I’m lost  In wonder, love, and praise.

Ten thousand thousand precious gifts  My daily thanks employ;
Nor is the least a cheerful heart  That tastes those gifts with joy.

Through all eternity to Thee  A joyful song I’ll raise;
But, oh!  eternity’s too short  To utter all Thy praise!

The Absolution

The Scripture Reading – Luke 10: 1-3, 16-20

      In sending out His disciples, Jesus reminds them and us both of the great Gospel need, the opposition encountered, and the great miracle of faith they and those who believe will experience

1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. 16 “He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.” 17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.” 18 He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

The Apostles Creed (Page 12 in Hymnal)

I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

“Create In Me” (Page 12 in Hymnal)

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and renew a right spirit within me,
Cast me not away from Thy presence;
and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;
and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen.

The Offering of Thankful Hearts

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction Amen
