Christmas Eve Service
Sunday, December 24, 2013 (5:30 p.m.)
Song by Children & Choir – “Christmastime” (Director: Cathy Augustin, Accompanist: Ryan Augustin)
The Lord himself will give you a sign. The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel. [Isaiah 7:14]
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. [Isaiah 9:6]
Other prophets, like Micah, also foretold
More truths about Jesus which God let them know
And ev’ry prediction all God’s prophets made
Each one came true, including the place.
But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me One who will be ruler over Israel, Whose origins are from of old, even from everlasting.” [Micah 5:2]
Congregational TLH 647 : O Little Town of Bethlehem
♫ 1. O little town of Bethlehem, How still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by;
Yet in thy darkness shineth The everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.
2. For Christ is born of Mary, And gathered all above,
While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars, together Proclaim the holy birth
And praises sing to God, the King, And peace to men on earth.
3. How silently, how silently, The wondrous Gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven.
No ear may hear His coming, But in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive Him still, The dear Christ enters in.
4. O holy Child of Bethlehem, Descend to us, we pray;
Cast out our sin and enter in, Be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell:
Oh, come to us, abide with us, Our Lord Immanuel!
Yunseo Park, Ariana Doyle, Ryan Lang, Emma Moen:
‘Twas months before Christmas when a young lady saw
An angel who brought her a message from God
The young lady named Mary couldn’t believe
The news from the Angel she was about to receive
Olivia Thurow, Jillian Gamble:
In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee named Nazareth. He had a message for a young woman promised in marriage to a man named Joseph, who was a descendant of King David. Her name was Mary. The angel came to her and said, “Peace be with you! The Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you!”
Jadyn Karow, Ravyn Miles, Sam Radermacher:
Mary was deeply troubled by the angel’s message, and she wondered what his words meant. The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary; God has been gracious to you. You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. The Lord God will make Him a king, as His ancestor David was, and He will be the king of the descendants of Jacob forever; His kingdom will never end!” Mary said to the angel, “I am a virgin. How, then, can this be?”
Brynn Schierenbeck, Maya Seeley, and Linsey Sydow:
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God’s power will rest upon you. For this reason the holy Child will be called the Son of God. Remember your relative Elizabeth. It is said that she cannot have children, but she herself is now six months pregnant, even though she is very old. For there is nothing that God cannot do.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” said Mary; “may it happen to me as you have said.” And the angel left her. [Luke 1:26-38]
Song by Choir – “Glad Tidings Canticle”
(Director: Cathy Augustin, Accompanist: Ryan Augustin)
‘Twas months before Christmas when an angel did speak
To Joseph, who was nervous, while he had a dream
The angel said it’s alright, marry Mary as planned
And Joseph did what we all should, He obeyed God’s command.
This was how the birth of Jesus Christ took place. His mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they were married, she found out that she was going to have a baby by the Holy Spirit. Joseph was a righteous man, but he did not want to disgrace Mary publicly; so he made plans to break the engagement privately. While he was thinking about this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary to be your wife. For it is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived. She will have a son, and you will name Him Jesus—because He will save His people from their sins.” Now all this happened in order to make come true what the Lord had said through the prophet, “A virgin will become pregnant and have a son, and He will be called Immanuel” (which means, “God is with us”). So when Joseph woke up, he married Mary, as the angel of the Lord had told him to. [Matthew 1:18-24]
Song by the Children Grades 3-8 – “Joseph’s Lullaby”
Gr 3 & 4 – Ashlyn Erickson, Luke Gullerud, Alexa Lynner, Noah Thurow, Dylan Krueger, Joel Kuehne, Matt Radermacher, Claire Schierenbeck, Levi Seeley, Quinn Williams, and Averie Williams:
‘Twas a while before Christmas when the emperor said
Let’s count all the people and see what number we get
So a census was called for meaning Joseph and Mary
Had to travel to Bethlehem where she’d have her baby.
And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. [Luke 2:3-7]
Song by the Children Grades K-2 – “He is Born”
Long, long time ago the people had a hope
To see Messiah come; God’s special promised one;
Then angels came to say that He was born that day
The shepherds went to tell the news that Jesus Christ had come.
(Refrain) He is born, He is born, Jesus Christ is born!
It’s the time to celebrate that Jesus Christ is born!
He is born, He is born, Jesus Christ is born!
Merry Christmas everyone, for Jesus Christ is born!
It was long ago, but even if that’s so,
I know He came for me, to die and set me free.
So now I will rejoice, and lift my hands and voice;
Proclaim the news to everyone that Jesus Christ has come! Refrain.
‘Twas the very first Christmas, the Son of God’s birth
And the angels got busy, out spreading the word
They appeared to some shepherds and scared them a bit
Said the Savior‘s been born, and where they’d find Him.
And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this Child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. [Luke 2:9-18]
Congregational TLH 136 : Angels from the Realms of Glory
‘Twas months after Christmas when the Wise Men arrived
They’d followed a star for a very long time
They came to the house where Jesus now lived
Where they bowed down and worshipped and gave gifts to Him
After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the Child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the Child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. [Matthew 2:9-11]
‘Twas years after the first Christmas, 30 or so
When Jesus, now grown up, sat down and spoke
These words to His followers, about who He was
Our Savior, our shepherd, God’s one and only Son.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. [John 14:6]
Just a little time later, he died on a cross
He’d came here to seek and to save those who are lost
He died to save all sinners just like you and me
Forgiveness is ours if in Jesus Christ we believe.
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. [Romans 10:9]
This night before Christmas, all through your house
We pray you’ll be talking and thinking about
Not just the presents under a tree
But the baby who was born to save you and me.

Congregation joins in for Silent Night ( TLH 646 : Silent Night )
Silent night! Holy night! Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories streams from heaven afar, Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia,
Christ, the Savior is born, Christ, the Savior is born!
Silent night! Holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.
