We have sinned against You in thought, word and deed – by what we have done and what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly de- serve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy Name. Amen. (The Absolution) God’s Proclamation Of Forgiveness In Christ A Responsive Reading On Christian Education P: Train up a child in the way he should go, C: And when he is old he will not depart from it P: Whether it be in church, school, work or the home, C: Let us rejoice in every opportunity for Christian education. Sing: Dear Shepherd, look with grace divine Upon Thy young and tender sheep; Thy cherished lambs protect & keep,As Thou hast sought them to be Thine. And look on us who in Thy place Should feed them on Thy pastures green, And lead them to Thy springs serene,And guard them from the foes they face. P: O Lord, through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. C: Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. P: Guide us as we study Your Word in the many times and places You have given us to hear it. C: May we follow it in truth and faithfully use it to instruct every member of Your church. How little can our feeble hands Suffice this holy work to do! And cold we are and careless, too, To train them as we have command. Good Shepherd, give us greater love, More zeal to guide them by Thy rule, In ev’ry home, in church, in school, By Thy sweet Word, to heaven above. P: Unless the LORD builds the house, C: Those who build it labor in vain. P Unless the LORD watches over the city, C: The watchman stays awake in vain. P: O LORD, unless Your Spirit grants us wisdom through Your Word, C: All of our education is in vain. Bless us through the gift of Chris- tian education and teach us to follow yourWord alone – for guidance, for truth, and for life. Bless parents, pastors, teachers all, Thy youthful saints in faith to rear, That they may love Thee without fear, And walk obedient to Thy call. God of our fathers, make us see The duty we our children owe By word and walk to teach them so That, as they live, they live to Thee. The Scripture Reading – Psalm 78: 1-7 (Every generation is called to pass along to the next the wonderful works and the praises of the Lord that “they might set their hope on God.”) The Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day he rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father al- mighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Christian church, the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen. The Gospel Reading – John 11: 45-54 While it was the unbelieving hearts of the Jewish that both rejected the true Messiah and brought about the tragic events culminating in His crucifixion, yet this was also the long-prophesied saving will of the Father Who sent His beloved Son as man’s atoning sacrifice for sin. Even the Jewish high priest spoke unknowingly of this great truth of redemption.

Then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert. The parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water; In the habita- tion of jackals, where each lay, there shall be reeds and rushes. GOD GIVES A TRUE “OPPOSITE DAY”
