The Angel Guards the Gate No More

The Sermon: Genesis 3: 23-24 ; Revelation 22: 13-14

“So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden…… After He drove the man out, He placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life”…… “I am the Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.”

Christmas Day

Thursday, December 25, 2014 (9:00 a.m.)

Song by Choir –“Gloria in Excelsis Deo” (arr. Wacker)
(Director: Cathy Augustin)

Opening [lsb num=375]

The Invocation

C: Heavenly Father, we come before You as unworthy sinners who deserve neither Your grace nor the blessings of Christmas. Have mercy on us for the sake of our ChristChild Savior.  Release us from Satan’s sin-prison and heal our broken hearts.

P: It is my Christmas Day privilege as your called shepherd to join Isaiah of old in announcing and celebrating the Messiah’s coming “to heal the broken-hearted and to proclaim deliverance to the captives.” (Isaiah 61:1) through the Christmas Gospel. May this assurance of Christmas forgiveness be yours and with it a heart filled with true Christmas joy.

C: He comes the prisoners to release, In Satan’s bondage held.
The gates of brass before Him burst, the iron fetters yield.

He comes the broken heart to bind, the bleeding soul to cure,
And with the treasures of His grace  To enrich the humble poor.

P: Lord Jesus Christ, true God, Son of the Father from eternity,

C: Lord Jesus Christ, true Man, born of the virgin Mary:

P: At great cost You redeemed us from sin, death and the power of Satan.

C: Not with gold or silver, but with Your holy, precious blood and with Your innocent suffering and death.

P: Claim us as Your own, to live under You in Your kingdom,

C: To serve You in everlasting righteousness, innocence and blessedness.

P: Just as You are risen from the dead and live and rule eternally.

C: We hear the Christmas angels the great, glad tidings tell;
O, come to us, abide with us, our Lord Immanuel.

The Scripture Reading – Hebrews 1: 1-8

As we gaze again into the Christmas manger, we see a human baby – and yet through Scripture and by faith we see so much more: The very radiance of God’s glory, the very world’s Creator, The One come to redeem and purify mankind, the One vastly superior to the very angels of God, the One Who rules all in heaven and earth, the One whom we are called upon to worship and praise now and evermore.
