Song by Choir – Luther’s Morning Prayer”
(Director: Cathy Augustin)

Hymn LSB 578 (V 3-5): Thy Strong Word Hymnary.org link “Thy Strong Word Bespeaks Us Righteous”

The Invocation And Responsive Reformation Prayer

P: O Lord, our God, how many and powerful are the enemies of Your Word, Who by deceit and force seek to overthrow Your precious Gospel of salvation! But we Christians take comfort in Your promises that Your Word will endure forever, and that the gates of hell will not prevail against Your Church.

C: O Lord, You are our comfort and strength!

P: Even though Satan and his cohorts have always found some ready to believe error and to persecute the Truth, nevertheless, You have curbed their furious wrath and not permitted the overthrow of the Christian faith. For these blessings of Your protective hand we are eternally grateful!

C: O Lord, You are our comfort and strength!

P: We further thank You that at a time when Satan had corrupted and deceived the minds of many, You graciously raised up Martin Luther and other faithful confessors. You placed a profound love for Your Word into their hearts, and restored the Gospel in its truth and purity through their labors. Oh, give us always faithful Christian pastors, teachers and members whose consciences, like that of Luther, are bound only by Your Word.

C: O Lord, You are our comfort and strength!

P: We are grateful that salvation has come to us as heirs of the Reformation through the hearing and believing of this faithful saying, namely, that Jesus Christ has redeemed us from our sins. We know Whom we have believed and stand justified by His blood.

C: For Your great mercy, O Lord, we thank You!

P: As Your children through faith in Christ we are especially conscious this day of the blessings from Your Word restored to us by the Reformation. May our hearts truly bow in awe before Your Word and rejoice in Your promises.

C: O Lord, hear our prayer!

P: Help us to teach Your Word with diligence to our children. Make us zealous to hear and learn it, that it may ever be in our souls a glorious beacon lighting the way to heaven through Christ, a lamp in this dark and evil world, guiding our footsteps along the path of righteousness.

C: O Lord, hear our prayer!

P: Cause Your Word, which never return empty, to be proclaimed in all the world and through it deliver sinners from the power of Satan into the Kingdom of Christ.

C: O Lord, hear our prayer!

P: Lord, forgive our sins for Jesus’ sake. Especially at this time do we ask for forgiveness for sins against Your holy Word: sins of neglecting to read and use it ourselves, of failing to listen with all diligence when it is proclaimed, of not wholeheartedly trusting all Your promises, of not following or appreciating fully Your Word and its blessings among us.

C: Forgive our many sins, and grant us Your grace and the will to live according to Your Word. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.

1 God loved the world so that He gave  His only Son the lost to save,
That all who would in Him believe Should everlasting life receive.

2 Christ Jesus is the ground of faith,
Who was made flesh and suffered death;

All then who trust in Him alone
Are built on this chief cornerstone.

The Scripture Reading – Habakkuk 2: 2-5

As the inspired prophet proclaims the great Gospel truth, “The righteous will live by faith”, it comes to him as part of “written down” divine “revelation” (the Scriptures) meant to be “heralded” to all. Everything in it will come to pass and be fulfilled.

The Apostles Creed (Inside Back Cover Of Hymnal)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn: “Lord, Give Us Hearts to Treasure”
Text © 2017 J. Snell     Tune: WIE LIEBLICH IST DER MAIEN

♫ 1 Lord, give us hearts to treasure  Your Holy Word alone.
Its message of salvation – By Christ; our sins atoned.
Lord, may we always cherish,  Its holy truth so pure;
On guard, while still rejecting  All teaching that’s impure.

2 Restored to us to treasure  To keep God’s message clear,
Within this generation;  Lord, help us persevere,
To stand and not to waver  Upon God’s truth alone.
No matter what the battle—In Christ it’s overthrown!

3 To God alone all glory  With joyful lips now praise.
Exalt Him for His mercy;  Your joyful songs upraise.
For grace so freely given  Presented for the lost.
How can we ever measure  The depth of all the cost?

4 For all Your saving mercy,  Your love beyond compare,
The message of the Gospel:  Your Son, You did not spare,
Extending grace to sinners,  Sufficient for their need,
In Christ alone, all sinners  From sin and death were freed.

5 Oh, may our faith be anchored  In God’s redeeming grace,
Not works or merit in us,  God’s truth alone the base:
That we though heavy laden,  By sin so sore oppressed;
In Christ find our salvation – Gift of eternal rest!

6 So, may our faith give witness  To all both far and near;
To sinners lost and desp’rate,  The message that is clear:
“Christ crucified, the Savior, Has saved us by His grace!”
Pray all who hear the message  This saving truth embrace!
