The Lord Supplies His Church’s Needs

The Sermon…………………………………………….. Acts 1: 15-26

15In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16and said, “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus– 17he was one of our number and shared in this ministry.”  18(With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)  20“For,” said Peter, “it is written in the book of Psalms, ” ‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and, ” ‘May another take his place of leadership.’ 21Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.” 23So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” 26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

Opening Hymn LSB 554 : O Jesus, King Most Wonderful Hymnary.org link “O Jesus, King Most Wonderful”

Invocation, Confessional Prayer and Responsive Reading of Psalm 26

P:Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity,
C: And I have trusted in the Lord without wavering.
P:Prove me, O Lord, and try me;
C: test my heart and my mind.
P:For your steadfast love is before my eyes,
C: and I walk in your faithfulness.

P: I do not sit with men of falsehood,
C: nor do I consort with hypocrites.
P: I hate the assembly of evildoers,
C: and I will not sit with the wicked.

P: I wash my hands in innocence
C: and go around your altar, O Lord,
P: proclaiming thanksgiving aloud,
C: and telling all your wondrous deeds.

P: O Lord, I love the habitation of your house
C: and the place where your glory dwells.
P: Do not sweep my soul away with sinners,
C: nor my life with bloodthirsty men,
P:  in whose hands are evil devices,
C: and whose right hands are full of bribes.

P: But as for me, I shall walk in my integrity;
C: redeem me, and be gracious to me.
P: My foot stands on level ground;
C: in the great assembly I will bless the Lord.

ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

The Scripture Reading – Excerpts from 2 Timothy

Spirit-given encouragement from the Apostle Paul to young pastor Timothy regarding the nature, the calling, the responsibilities and the blessing of the public ministry.

The Apostles Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

“Create In Me” (Hymn 956)

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me,
Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit.

Hymn – “Pour Out Thy Spirit From on High” – TLH 490 : Pour out Thy Spirit from on High Hymnary.org link  (The Lutheran Hymnal)

1 Pour out Thy Spirit from on high,  Lord, Thine assembled servants bless;
Graces and gifts to each supply
And clothe Thy priests with righteousness.

2 Before Thine altar when we stand
To teach the truth, as taught by Thee,
Savior, like stars in Thy right hand,
The angels of Thy churches be.

3 Wisdom and zeal and faith impart,
Firmness with meekness, from above,
To bear Thy people on our heart,
And love the souls whom Thou dost love;

4 To watch and pray and never faint
By day and night strict guard to keep,
To warn the sinner, cheer the saint,
Nourish Thy lambs, and feed Thy sheep.

5 Then, when our work is finished here,
We may in hope our charge resign.
When the Chief Shepherd shall appear,
O God, may they and we be Thine. Amen.

Our Offering

The Lord’s Prayer (Inside Back Cover Of Hymnal)

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Benediction ♫ Amen, Amen, Amen
