August 15, 2010 9:00 a.m
For Pre-Service Reading: Psalm 116, Page 148 In Hymnal
Opening Prayer By Pastor
Opening Hymn 340 (V 1-6) – “Awake, My Soul, To Joyful Lays”
The Invocation And Responsive Reading
P: The Son of God was the eternal Word Who with the Father and the Holy
Spirit existed before time and creation began. Even after He also became
human, Jesus Christ did not lose either His divine Being or His eternal glory.
C: “We know that the Son of God has come, so that we may know Him
Who is true. He is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20)….“And
the Word became flesh and lived among us. And we beheld His glory,
the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)
P: While many seek salvation and life in their own character and works, God’s
true children ever confess their own great sin and spiritual unworthiness
before a holy and just God. Their only hope is found in God’s great gift of
love and mercy, the heaven-sent Savior & Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ.
C:“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John
6:68) …… “Jesus answered,’I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.
No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)
Sing:
Dear Christ,the Rock I on which I build,My Shield & Hiding-place;
My never-failing Treas’ry,filled With boundless stores of grace.
Through Thee my heart’s acceptance gain Altho’ with sin defiled.
Satan accuses me in vain, For I am God’s dear child.
P: Only a sinless Substitute could stand in our place before a holy God. God
provided that holy Substitute and Savior in the Person of His beloved Son,
the Lord Jesus Christ, Who lived and died and rose again for us.
C: “God made Him Who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we
might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5: 21)…..“Christ
has redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us.
As it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” (Galatians
3:13)
P: Because our Savior bore the punishment for our sins on the cross, we stand
justified, declared not guilty of our sins in the heavenly court, forgiven and
righteous. In this we find healing, comfort, joy and peace.
C: “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting men’s
sins against them.” (2 Corinthians 5:19)…. “Christ was delivered for our
offenses and raised again for our justification.” (Romans 4:25)
Sing:
How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear.
It makes the wounded spirit whole And calms the troubled breast.
‘Tis manna to the hungry soul And to the weary, rest.
P: Our heart-felt response to our Savior’s life-saving and life-changing Gospel
can only be that of praise and thanksgiving – shown in our worship, our lives and
our relationships both now and evermore.
C: “What shall I give to the Lord for all His blessings upon me? I will lift
up the cup of salvation and call on the Name of the Lord. I will offer to
the Lord the sacrifice of praise an thanksgiving; I will fulfill my vows to
the Lord in the presence of His people – now and evermore. Praise the
Lord” (Psalm 116 excerpts)
Sing:
Jesus, my Shepherd, Guardian, Friend My Prophet, Priest and King.
My Lord,my Life,my Way, my End, Accept the praise I bring.
Through life I would Thy love proclaim With every fleeting breath;
And may the music of Thy Name Refresh my soul in death!
The Scripture Reading - Luke 5:17 – 26
The Apostles Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick & the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.
