Twelvth Sunday After Pentecost

                                        August 15, 2010     9:00 a.m

For Pre-Service Reading:  Psalm 116, Page 148 In Hymnal

                                                   Opening Prayer By Pastor

Opening Hymn 340 (V 1-6) – “Awake, My Soul, To Joyful Lays”

                              The Invocation And  Responsive Reading

P: The Son of God was the eternal Word Who with the Father and the Holy

Spirit existed before time and creation began. Even after He also became

human, Jesus Christ did not lose either His divine Being or His eternal glory.

C: “We know that the Son of God has come, so that we may know Him

Who is true. He is the true God and eternal life” (1 John 5:20)….“And

the Word became flesh and lived among us. And we beheld His glory,

the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

P: While many seek salvation and life in their own character and works, God’s

true children ever confess their own great sin and spiritual unworthiness

before a holy and just God. Their only hope is found in God’s great gift of

love and mercy, the heaven-sent Savior & Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ.

C:“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John

6:68) …… “Jesus answered,’I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.

No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)

                                                                                            Sing:

        Dear Christ,the Rock I on which I build,My Shield & Hiding-place;

My never-failing Treas’ry,filled  With boundless stores of grace.

Through Thee my heart’s acceptance gain  Altho’ with sin defiled.

Satan accuses me in vain, For I am God’s dear child.

P: Only a sinless Substitute could stand in our place before a holy God. God

provided that holy Substitute and Savior in the Person of His beloved Son,

the Lord Jesus Christ, Who lived and died and rose again for us.

C:  “God made Him Who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we

might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5: 21)…..“Christ

has redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us.

As it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.” (Galatians

3:13)

P: Because our Savior bore the punishment for our sins on the cross, we stand

justified, declared not guilty of our sins in the heavenly court, forgiven and

righteous. In this we find healing, comfort, joy and peace.

C: “God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting men’s

sins against them.” (2 Corinthians 5:19)…. “Christ was delivered for our

offenses and raised again for our justification.” (Romans 4:25)

                                                              Sing:

How sweet the Name of Jesus sounds  In a believer’s ear!

It soothes his sorrow, heals his wounds, And drives away his fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole And calms the troubled breast.

‘Tis manna to the hungry soul  And to the weary, rest.

        P: Our heart-felt response to our Savior’s life-saving and life-changing Gospel

can only be that of praise and thanksgiving – shown in our worship, our lives and

our relationships both now and evermore.

C: “What shall I give to the Lord for all His blessings upon me? I will lift

up the cup of salvation and call on the Name of the Lord. I will offer to

the Lord the sacrifice of praise an thanksgiving; I will fulfill my vows to

the Lord in the presence of His people – now and evermore. Praise the

      Lord” (Psalm 116 excerpts)

                                                            Sing:

Jesus, my Shepherd, Guardian, Friend  My Prophet, Priest and King.

My Lord,my Life,my Way, my End, Accept the praise I bring.

     Through life I would Thy love proclaim With every fleeting breath;

And may the music of Thy Name  Refresh my soul in death!

The Scripture Reading  -  Luke 5:17 – 26

Hymn 370 - “My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less”

       The Sermon …………………………………………………….. Luke 7: 36 – 50

Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. And behold,a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; And she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; And she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.

Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This man, if He were a prophet, would who and what manner of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

So he said, “Teacher, say it.”

“There was a certain creditor who had tow debtors. One owed 500 denarii and the other 50. And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell me, which of them will love him more.”

Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”

And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.”

Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon,“Do you see this woman? I entered your house; You gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head. You gave me no kiss, but this woman has kissed My feet since the time I came in. You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My head with fragrant oil.”

“Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. For to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” Then He said to her, Your sins are forgiven.” And those who sat at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

your being to attain and secure the great faith-victory for which God has

called you heaven-ward in Christ Jesus.

The Apostles Creed (Supplement, Page 15)

       The Sermon ……………………………………………………. 1 Corinthians 9: 24 – 27

“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the

prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the

games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; But

we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a

man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air.  No, I train my

body and make it my servant so that after I have preached to others,I myself

will not be disqualified for the prize.”

                                         RUN  FOR  YOUR  LIFE !

1. Perservere Against Great Sin-Obstacles

2. Focus On Jesus Who Saves And Strengthens Us

3. Be Encouraged By The “Cloud Of Witnesses” Surrounding You

Hymn 447 – “Fight The Good Fight With All Thy Might”

The Offering And Prayers

Lord God, heavenly Father, neither in time nor in eternity can we sufficiently thank You for Your great grace and mercy toward us – for washing us clean in the blood of Your dear Son, for receiving us into

Your family in infancy through Holy Baptism, for permitting us to hear, learn and grow in Your Word of grace, for raising us when we fell and strengthening us when we were weak, for helping us in our every need

and comforting us in our sorrows, for ever keeping before our eyes the blessed hope of everlasting life.

O help us not to be ungrateful for the great grace we have

received. As we run our life’s race, inspire and strengthen us by Your

Holy Spirit. As we face the many obstacles and burdens that come

from within and without, help us overcome them through Your forgiving

and empowering love; As we grow weary and discouraged, restore us

and uplift us with your precious promises and assurances of victory in

Your Son. Help us ever focus our eyes on Jesus, the Author & Finisher

of our faith. For He has run the race before us and for us, and has secured victory for us by faith. His joy in securing our salvation moved

Him to endure the cross and every enemy attack. May we also find joy

in loving, praising, pleasing and serving Him as we run our race.

Dear Father, help us fight the good fight, keep the faith and fin-

ish our race – knowing that as we cross the finish line, a glorious prize awaits us in heaven. May the sure and certain hope of that crown of

life and righteousness fill our hearts with joy. Lord, reawaken, renew, rekindle and  rejuvenate our hearts with a zeal to run the great race

You have set before us. This we ask in the Name of our Savior Who

has taught us to pray – “Our Father Who Art In Heaven…”

The Benediction & Closing Hymn: “Look Up, Look Up To Jesus”

               1. Look up! Look up to Jesus! Look to His strength alone;

The arm of flesh will fail you,  Ye dare not trust your own.

His Word alone will lead you  In care or sorrow’s cries -

To run your race undaunted, To gain the victor’s prize.

                 2. Look up! Look up to Jesus!  The race will not be long;

Today the race’s struggle  and soon, the victor’s song.

                   To him that overcometh  A crown of life shall be;

He with the King of Glory  Shall reign eternally.

The Order Of Service ………………………………………… Hymnal, Page 32

                             The Scripture  Reading – Mark 2 : 1 – 12

(To any who may question Jesus’ power and authority to forgive sins in His Name, Jesus shows His miraculous ability to heal both body and soul.)

The Apostles Creed (Hymnal, Page 12)

I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.                   Hymn 348 – “Jesus, Jesus, Only Jesus”

           The Sermon ………………………………………………………….. Mark 14: 34 – 36

“When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.   And when the men of that place recognized Him, they sent out into all the surrounding region, brought to Him all who were sick, and begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.”

               Hymn 352 - “O Savior, Precious Savior”

Our Gifts Of Faith And Love

Our Prayer To Our Good Shepherd

Lord Jesus, indeed You are the Good Shepherd of Your sheep; For You alone have rescued us from the power of the Evil One and by the precious ransom of Your divine and holy blood have purchased us for Your own. You have provided us rich pasture in Your Word and Sacrament; You alone have gathered, defended, lead and governed us. You alone have helped and healed us in so many ways; You alone can preserve us unto eternal life – and all of this alone by Your mighty and saving power.

Grant us grace, we pray, to believe with all our hearts that we are Your precious possession. May we in faith ever trust and follow You as You lead us safely and securely through the maze and mire of life in this sinful world. May we ever hear and follow Your voice by which You lead us to our heavenly home.

We confess that we often shudder when we think of our own weakness and utter helplessness, of Satan’s trickery and treachery and of the inclination of our own sinful flesh. Yet, greater are You Who live in us that all our enemies. Strengthen our faith, so that we may firmly cling to Your promise: “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life; And they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand.”

            BEREA  50TH  ANNIVERSARY  SERVICE

                                        June 20, 2010       10:00 a.m.

Opening Sunday School Song: “I Am Jesus’ Little Lamb”

Opening Hymn: “For Many Years, O God Of Grace”

For many years, O God of grace,This church has been Thy dwelling-place,

And we Thy congregation. Upon the precious Cornerstone

Our faith is built, and Christ alone  Is still our one Foundation.

Today we pray: “Let us greet Thee,Lord, and meet Thee  Here with singing,

All our praises to Thee bringing.

Here children have been born anew  As manifold as morning dew,

Their vows to Thee confessing. Here many found a table spread,

Received Christ’s body with the bread  And drank the cup of blessing.

Today we pray: “Let none falter at Thine altar.  We adore thee,

                                       Gladly worship here before Thee.”

Here as the marriage vows were made,Both bride & groom besought Thine aid,

Thy love their own transcending. Here mourners with their troubled hearts,

Have found the peace Thy Word imparts, The joy that knows no ending.

Today we pray: “May the story of Thy glory  here resounding

Be a song of grace abounding!”

The Invocation And Confession Of Sins

All: Almighty and eternal God, we come before You as creatures before

their Creator and as sinners before a holy God. Many are the sins of

thought, word and deed we have committed both personally and congrega-tionally. As our fathers sought mercy and forgiveness at the foot of the

cross, so we in humble repentance come before You. For Jesus’ sake, for-

give us, reassure us and renew us  by the power of Your mighty Gospel.

P: As the Lord of the Church in past years has through His called servants assured countless souls of His forgiveness in Christ, so it is my privilege

today to assure you of the forgiveness of your sins in the Name of the

Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

                      A  RESPONSIVE  ANNIVERSARY  PRAYER

P: Heavenly Father, when the time was right You raised up faithful servants

in Your Church to boldly proclaim Your Word and Gospel: Your Old Test-

ament Prophets and New Testament apostles, Your Reformation servants

and faithful believers of all ages.

C: You renewed Your people with the light of Your love, You granted

power and success to the proclamation of the Gospel and Your holy

Church grew and prospered throughout the world.

P: When the time was right, You brought together the founders of our con-

gregation. Guided by Your Spirit, they sought only Your glory through

faithful allegiance to Your Word and joyous proclamation of Your Gospel.

C: Over the years, You have blessed the ministry of this congregation

by raising up sons and daughter and others through whom You have

preserved and proclaimed the saving Gospel in our midst.

P: Let this Anniversary be a time, O Lord, when You renew in us both a

spirit of thanksgiving for all Your blessings & a spirit of joy in our service

to You and fellowship with one another.

C: Grant to us in our day the courage of the apostles, the steadfastness

of the reformers and the dedication of the leaders of the past. May the

Lord our God be with us as He was with our fathers. May He never

        leave us nor forsake us.

Sing: Now thank we all our God With heart and hands and voices,

Who wondrous things hath done,  In Whom His world rejoices.

Who from our mother’s arms  Hath blessed us on our way

With countless gifts of love,  And still is ours today.

All praise and thanks to God  The Father now be given,

The Son, and Him Who reigns  With them in highest heaven.

The one eternal God,  Whom earth and heav’n adore!

For thus it was, is now,  And shall be evermore. Amen.

                              The Scripture Reading – John 17: 14 – 26

(Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer To His Father For All Believers: Protect Them

From The Evil One, Sanctify Them By Your Truth, Grant Them True Unity

In Your Son And Word and Bring Them To Be With Me In Glory.)

Vocal Duet: “For Where Love Is, There Is God” (Wagner)

                                                The  Apostles  Creed

I believe in God the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of

the virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resur-rection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn:  “Oh Lord, Our God” (Words By Pastor L.D. Redlin)

        The Sermon ………………………………………………………. Acts 17: 10 – 12

“Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away

by night to Berea, When they arrived, they went into the

synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded

than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the

Word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures

daily to find out whether these things were really so.  Therefore many of

them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well

        as men.

                      BEREANS  THEN  -  BEREANS  NOW

                            1. Guided Solely By The Word Of God

                    2. Grounded Firmly On The Truth Of Christ

Hymn: “Come To The Jubilee”  (Words By Pastor L.D. Redlin)

                           1. Come to the jubilee,  God’s people one and all.

Who through the years have been both blest  In body and in soul.

Lift up your hearts to sing,  And raise your voices strong.

Let all the world behold our God  And join to sing our song.

                        2. Come, let us hear His Word  Inspired by our God.

It lights our ev’ry step as we  Through this world’s darkness plod.

As we thus walk with God  Our hand in His each day,

We’ll find a peace in heart and soul,  In Him, the Truth, the Way.

                        3. Come, let us talk with God;  We never are alone.

He hears us each and ev’ry one  And all our needs are known.

In sorrow and in pain  Our God will comfort us.

And bring us through the trying hours  To peace and happiness.

                     4. Come, let us offer gifts  With hearts of thankfulness,

That we may tell the whole wide world  What God has done for us.

And give to people lost,  And caught in Satan’s lies,

The gift of God’s redemptive grace  to dry repentant eyes.

                     5. Come, let us dedicate   Ourselves to God each day.

May He inspire our heart and mind,  And everything we say.

The future of our lives  Rests firmly in His Love.

Throughout our life we’ll live for him,  On earth and then above.

Anniversary Thankoffering Organ-Piano Duet-“Praise To The Lord”)

        P: O Lord, our God, our Help in ages past, our hope for years to come;

C: On this Anniversary day we give all glory to You alone as we

remember the blessings of Your grace in the past and present, trusting

You will continue to bless us into the future.

P: O Lord, our God we thank you for so bountifully blessing for 50 years

and for giving us opportunity to glorify Your Name and proclaim Your

wondrous works from one generation to another.

C: We thank You for upholding our flock through good and difficult

times; And we thank You especially for those now fallen asleep who

served Your Church in the past, who remained faithful to the end, and

now have received the crown of life through Christ Jesus.

P: Holy and mighty God,on this Anniversary we praise You for the wonder-

ful work You give Your Church to do, that Your saving Name may be

        known in all the earth.

C: We praise You, O Savior, for the Gospel of salvation You have im-

printed upon our heart and soul. Continue to be with us in the future

as You have in the past and keep us in Your saving grace. By Your

Spirit, may we be kept firm in our faith and steadfast in our calling

so that generations to come may share with us Your gift of eternal life.

        Amen.

                                                                                Sing:

        The Church’s one foundation  Is Jesus Christ, her Lord;

She is His new creation  By water and the Word.

        From heav’n He came and sought her  To be His holy bride;

With His own blood he bought her, And for her life He died.

The Church shall never perish!  Her dear Lord to defend,

To guide, sustain, and cherish,  Is with her to the end.

Then with the vision glorious  Her longing eyes are blest

And the great Church victorious  Shall be the Church at rest.

“Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us,

But to Your Name give glory,

                                       Because of Your mercy,

                                   And because of Your Truth.”

                                                 - Psalm 115 : 1
